The Economic Crime (Transparency and Enforcement) Act 2022 has been a long-time coming, with certain of its contents being first mooted in 2016 when David Cameron gave a warning to foreign companies at an anti-corruption summit that they would be required to disclose the beneficial ownership of UK property. The Ukraine conflict accelerated the progression of the bill, which came into force on 15 March 2022, bringing with it new requirements in connection with overseas ownership of UK property and an expansion of powers with regard to Unexplained Wealth Orders and UK sanctions.
